On October 22, 2016, Johannes Bohnen spoke at the Council of the German American Conference at Harvard Berlin about the state of German-American relations in the run-up to the U.S. election on November 8, 2016. For Dr. Bohnen, relations are strained primarily because both countries are struggling with internal political problems. These reveal themselves in particular in the respective populism, as more and more citizens no longer feel represented by the political "elites." To revitalize relations internal issues should be addressed first. This should be complemented by a renewed transatlantic narrative that takes current challenges into account, building on a common history.
