On Sunday, May 8, 2022, historian Prof. Dr. Arnulf Baring would have turned 90. With gratitude, I remember this enlightened patriot and convinced “Atlanticist”. He was a valuable mentor and friend to me. Strong-minded, passionate, and often uncomfortable, he was committed to the res publica and held up a mirror to us Germans.
Especially important for him was the young generation of historically and politically interested people, whom he encouraged through countless conversations and joint study trips. His joy in debate and his sincere interest in other points of view inspired many.
On the occasion of his 75th birthday in 2007, friends and companions compiled texts about their encounters with Arnulf Baring. My contribution can be found here:
