On October 9th, BOHNEN Public Affairs hosted the fifth event of the Big Picture discussion series, which focuses on the major lines of development in politics and society. The guest this time was Paul Ziemiak, a member of the German Bundestag, who was recently confirmed with records results as chairman of the Junge Union.
Under the title "New generation, new geopolitics? Middle East, North Africa and the wavering of the West as challenges for security and prosperity", Ziemiak, moderator Dr. Johannes Bohnen and the numerous participants from the public sphere undertook a foreign policy tour d'horizon.
The topics discussed ranged from the unity of the EU, especially concerning Poland and Hungary, the relationship with the U.S., Germany's defense capacity and role in NATO, strategic approaches to the mixed situation in the Middle East, development policy and migration, to China's new Silk Road as a possible challenge to our liberal model of society. Along these complexes of problems, the question was discussed to what extent new thinking, especially by young but also established decision-makers, is capable of coming up with creative solutions.
